What exactly is a WIKI?

Wikis are simply collections of interconnected web-pages where anyone can easily edit the content of existing pages and create new pages. That means it is not 'my' webpage, but everyone's, as the wiki allows a community to work together to share information easily. By allowing anyone to edit a page so that a group of people can work together to create content, they change the hierarchy of who gives and receives information on the web. Anyone can make new pages related to their interests because the wiki can generate new pages and automatically link to them to generate a 'network' of interconnections between the content. Wiki links are based on the WikiWord (using WordsSmashedTogether).

There are three steps required to add a new page to the Wiki manually (see CreateNewPage to do it automatically):

  1. Add a DanglingLink to a page
    1. Edit an existing wiki page (simply double-click page / or click top-right button)
    2. While editing the existing page, type the new page's title as a WikiWord
    3. Store the existing page (button at the bottom)
    4. You will see your edited text and a DanglingLink
  2. Follow the DanglingLink
    1. Click on the DanglingLink's question mark '?'
    2. You will see an edit box for the new blank page
  3. Edit the new page and save it
    1. Type whatever you want, remembering the FormattingRules
    2. Click Store
    3. You will see the new page in all its glory. Congratulations, you've entered the wonderful world of wiki

To play with the FormattingRules without spoiling other pages, practice in the SandBox.

To see what other people have done, see RecentChanges. Each page has a history where every edit is stored - you can compare the differences for any pair of edits.

It is better if people create an account (see UserSettings), so that everyone then knows who is creating the content. When you create a user account, you can create a home page about yourself too!!! You have to give your name as a WikiWord (e.g. JohnDoe not John Doe).

You can also personalize the wiki using any of the WikiThemes.

To Vandals:

If you trash a page, anyone can easily get it back as the history of every edit is stored, we simply roll back to the last good version of a page. If you are just testing to see whether you can really edit the page, do that in the SandBox please.
