Thanks to everyone that has been reverting the spam from the fucker who is spamming the wiki.
So after more than a year, the wiki faces it's first serious assault on the "open door" policy.
I have introduced a spam-block measure for comments (no more than 4 links allowed) which stopped it dead in its tracks, but I cannot use that for the main pages. I have added each IP address I've seen to an IP block now - but that won't do too much.
We can lock pages down so that only registered users can edit pages - a step I have resisted for ages as it defeats part of the egalitarian nature I so love about a wiki. But asshole spammers don't really get that they ain't gonna get a chance to improve their link numbers as we will keep removing their edits, and lock down the pages finally.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
Ideally some kind of spam filter like for email would be great, sensing large numbers of links. Most easily is just that one link per line prbably means spam - but what about link lists like OperaBlogs. One could check for chinese characters in this instance, and the presence of e.g. shop263.com in an active way.
I've just added a Spam filter for our Chinese friend - we'll see how that goes... —{NonTroppo @ 30 Sep 2004 23:58 BST}
OK, as suggested by Andrew Gregory inspired by the CSS Wiki, all external links now go through the Google redirector, which should stop their value for this kind of link spamming. Some keywords on the link spamblock have been updated too. —{NonTroppo @ 09 Oct 2004 22:50 BST}
I had to update the Google redirector as it was breaking opera buttons on e.g. CustomSearches - I also added a spam basic stripper to comments (based on current spam). I am digesting http://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de/AntiSpamGlobalSolution and http://www.chongqed.org/prevent_spam.html (thanks MattiesWorld!) - some useful ideas there... —{NonTroppo @ 03 Nov 2004 21:50 GMT}
