26. September 2008 - Skin changes since the preview 9.60-10433

A deleted and two new skin.ini sections, new icons and the additional entries therefore

  1. The section [Scroll Marker] is gone, but now we have the new sections [Scroll Marker Up] and [Scroll Marker Down]; in use are the same images from the skin-folder `/scroll_marker` as before, but the arrows appearing now as `Corner topleft/topright for `up` and `Corner bottomleft/bottomright` for `down`
  2. New are the icons `icons/mail_ignored.png`, `contacts/contact_followed.png` and `contacts/contact_ignored.png` - the skin.ini entries therefore are mentioned below
  3. New are the following entries inside the section [Images]; `Mail Ignored = icons/mail_ignored.png`, `Contact38 = contacts/contact_followed.png` and `Contact39 = contacts/contact_ignored.png` using the aforementioned new icons. The old entry `Mail Active Contacts = contacts/contact_known.png` have changed to `Mail Active Contacts = contacts/contact_followed.png` (the old image is still in use as `Contact0 = contacts/contact_known.png`)

Note again:
You can change the behaviour for the scroll marker: Opera:config - User Prefs - Enable Scroll Marker = 0 is Off (default), 1 is On (if you reach the top or bottom), 2 is On (always)

5. September 2008 - Skin changes since the preview 9.60-10414

3 images for the scroll marker have changed, partly together with the entries/filenames

  1. The entries for the top/bottom tiles in the section [Scroll Marker] have changed from `scroll_marker/dash_line_anim.png` to `scroll_marker/bg-line.png` (so there is no more animation for the line); the new bright grey line image `scroll_marker/bg-line.png` replaces now `scroll_marker/dash_line_anim.png`
  2. Also the arrow images `scroll_marker/arrow-left.png` and `scroll_marker/arrow-right.png` have changed to a bright grey

Note:
You can change now the behaviour for the new scroll marker: Opera:config - User Prefs - Enable Scroll Marker = 0 is Off (default), 1 is On (if you reach the top or bottom), 2 is On (always) - in the last preview we had only On/Off with a checkbox

Two icon images are new, together with the entries in [Images]

  1. New are the entries Enable Text Selection Mode = buttons/text_select.png and Disable Text Selection Mode = buttons/pan.png in the section [Images]; these icons are new too. They are made for the button `Text selection On/Off` you find in Tools - Appearance - Buttons - Browser view (`Text selection Off` complies with `Scroll by drag`)

22. August 2008 - Skin changes since the final 9.52-10108

New sections for `Incomplete message toolbar` and `Scroll marker`, additional icon entries and some new icons

  1. New is the skin.ini section [Incomplete Message Toolbar] - defines a new toolbar which appears in case of incomplete downloaded mails (due to `Low bandwith mode` available per account; note the new checkbox in Tools - Mail and Chat accounts - Edit - Incoming); the `Incomplete message toolbar` appears then above the mail body and includes the button `Fetch complete message` (after pressing this button you have to check mail again in order to complete the download - here with a pop-account - why not directly... ?)
  2. New is also the section [Scroll Marker] - defines the left/right arrows and the animated .png (apng) as dotted line to find in the new skinfolder scroll_marker/. The scrollmarker you have to enable in Opera:config-User Prefs-Enable Scroll Marker - to see then while scrolling
  3. New are also the entries `Mail Unread No Body = icons/mail_unread_nobody.png`, `Mail Ignored No Body = icons/mail_ignored_nobody.png` and `Incomplete Message image = buttons/mail-incomplete.png` in the section [Images] - referring to the new icon images (the new icon `buttons/mail-incomplete.png` seems to be a smaller copy of the `dialog_images/info.png`)
  4. New are also the entries `Mail Followed No Body = icons/bookmark_unvisited.png` and `Mail Followed = icons/bookmark.png` in Images] - in use are here the already existing icons
  5. Note also the changed `icons/mail_nobody.png`

8. August 2008 - Skin changes since the preview 9.52-10100

There are some changed skin.ini sections and two new icons.

  1. Deleted the entry `Height = 30` in [Pagebar skin] (more than 30 shifted the icons/images on the head/tail and the plus-icon/arrow to the top)
  2. Changed the `Text color = #D0D0D0` to `Text color = E0E0E0` in [Pagebar button skin] - it`s a brighter grey in order to differ better between unread and normal tabs
  3. Added `Padding right = 1` and `Color = Window` in [Edit skin]. The new right padding gives 1px less space between the right border and the content, eg icons at the right of the address field (due to the default of 2px). The window color is defined now through the operating system (there are differences: `Color = window` draws a 1px border on top of the defined border and draws also the inner-behind-text-part of some edit/search fields. But every other color here draws only the 1px border on top of the defined border)
  4. Changed Margins and deleted Paddings in [Push button skin] and [Push default button skin]. But Margins have no effect here and paddings shifts only the text inside the button (now the default of 2px padding is valid). If you like to see more space around the push buttons you have to change the paddings for the [Dialog Button Border Skin] (btw. `Spacing=` in the [Dialog Button Border Skin] seems to have no effect)
  5. Deleted the sections [Push button skin.disabled] and [Push default button skin.disabled], but they can still be in use if you don`t like the automatically dimmed images (to see eg in the `Tools - Mail and Chat accounts - Add...` dialog)
  6. Added the forgotten section [Start popup skin] which draws the individual background for the Start bar
  7. Added `Padding top = 1` and `Padding bottom = 2` to the [Addressbar skin], so we have now 1px less because of the default padding of 2px for both. Added also `Margin top = 0` and `Margin bottom = 0` - which have no effect here
  8. Added the lacking entry `Lock panel = buttons/lock_page.png` which refers to the already existing `buttons/lock_page.png`; it`s for the missed `Lock panel - button` in the Links panel - the padlock is in use also for locked tabs (ways to dark there imho)
  9. Added the entry `Mail Filter Inverted = icons/tab_filter.png` - this icon is new - for the use on the tabs
  10. Added the entry `Contact0 Inverted = icons/tab_from.png` - this icon is new too - for the use on the tabs

25. June 2008 - No skin changes since the preview 9.51-10071, but this time I examined the new fallback behaviour in 9.5x a bit.

About the new fallback behaviour:

In 9.27 and older versions we had several skin parts without own skin sections; therefore we had some general sections, eg `Window skin` or `Browser window skin`. But since 9.5 we have own sections for much more skin parts; some worked before too and some are new. So it was necessary to introduce a new fallback behaviour, otherwise the new or changed parts appears also in older custom skins used with 9.5x as strange elements.

  1. In a custom skin used only for 9.27 and older versions, the entry `Version = 3` in [Info] have no effect; the old entry `Version = 2` is still valid then. The fallback behaviour in 9.27 is always: a lacking section have first fallback to the SAME section from the old standard-skin, and if this section is lacking too there, then the fallback goes to the BASE section from the custom-skin (and if the base is lacking too in the custom-skin, then fallback is the corresponding base from old standard-skin). Please note, that the BASE section means eg `Window skin` is the base of `Addressbar skin`, and the SAME section means eg `Addressbar skin` from the custom-skin - `Addressbar skin` from the old/new standard-skin.
  2. In a custom skin for 9.5x (and older versions) the entry `Version =` in [Info] have effect under several circumstances:

In comparison:

Sections which have the `Fallback version = 3` entry in the new standard-skin:

  1. [Addressbar Skin]
  2. [Chatbar skin]
  3. [Mailbar Skin]
  4. [Mail Compose Toolbar Skin]
  5. [Mail Compose Window Skin]
  6. [Mail Header Toolbar]
  7. [Mainbar Skin]
  8. [Menu Skin]
  9. [Navigationbar Skin]
  10. [Pagebar Floating Skin]
  11. [Pagebar Floating Button Skin]
  12. [Pagebar Skin]
  13. [Pagebar Head Skin]
  14. [Pagebar Head Button Skin]
  15. [Pagebar Tail Skin]
  16. [Panel Full Toolbar Skin]
  17. [Panel Treeview Skin]
  18. [Personalbar Skin]
  19. [Statusbar Skin]
  20. [Transfer Panel Details Skin]
  21. [Viewbar Skin]

Summary about the new fallback behaviour: it`s not that easy to handle since the old standard skin is no longer available for fallback; with Version = 3 or 2 in [Info] we can choose now if a custom skin should have fallback to the new/additional sections or in the old way (as said: without the old standard-skin then).

You find the outcommented entries at the end of the skin.ini for 9.5, together with a note about 80px reserved space/right margin. Use them as the following example: Mail Unread Header = icons/filter_open.png,,,,-60 The example draws the icon in front of the status title in the mailbar with margin right of -60px (note that only `Margin right` works - other space have to be inside your image). Please note also, that the headers are completed now with the new entry Mail Filter Header.

  1. Most important change is the file name, the old skin is now called classic_skin.zip (with this change, the skin works no longer as fallback-skin).
  2. Added in the skin.ini inside the section [Options] are the entries Large images = 0, Fallback background = 1 and Fallback foreground = 1. The Large images = 0 entry prevents from appearing the checkbox `Large images` in Appearance - Toolbars (there are no separate large images in this skin). The Fallback... entries says that if a section in this skin is lacking, there should be displayed the accordant section from the standard-skin (except [Info] and [Options]).
  3. Changed is the complete section [Browser skin], most important is there the Padding right = 0 entry - so the 1px at the right of the scrollbar is now in use too! In previous skin versions this change produced bad effects in the background for the contact picture (Contact properties - General), but since we have there an own skin (see below), the problem is gone.
  4. New is the section [Web Image Browser Skin] which draws the background for the picture mentioned above; it is a clone of the Browser skin but here with Padding right = 1.

Standard-skin, new:
Please note, that it is not yet possible to report about every detail here; so I have to focus a bit to the most important differences - details follows by and by. Note also, that a lot of the new things are `work in progress`, so they may change again until the skin is finished.

  1. The new skin is now the standard_skin.zip - please never change the file name or the location of the standard-skin, this skin works as fallback for lacking or future things.
  2. Changed is the version entry in the section [Info], now it`s Version = 3 and it means approx. that this skin uses all the new things. The old value Version = 2 is still valid for an old custom skin; there the new things should not appear - so it is not necessary to change the version in an old custom skin!
  3. If you take the new standard-skin as base for a custom skin, the most important is to change first the Fallback entries to the value 1 in the section [Options]. Please change then from Fallback background = 0 and Fallback foreground = 0 to Fallback background = 1 and Fallback foreground = 1. So you are sure, that lacking sections or lacking entries in [Boxes] and [Images] in your custom skin are drawn by the standard-skin (except [Info] and [Options])! Default values for both is 1 if the entries not exists. For a custom skin, based on the new standard skin, it is also recommended to remove all the Fallback version = 3 entries you find in a lot of the sections - these entries are made for the standard-fallback-skin only in order to define the fallback behaviour for custom skins (if a custom skin have Version = 3 in [Options] then this skin have fallback to all the sections with Fallback version = 3, but if a custom skin is defined as Version = 2 in [Options] then this skin have no fallback to the sections with Fallback version = 3).
  4. New is the entry Pageclosebuttonontop = 1 in the section [Options]; the value 1 draws the pagebar close buttons on top of the tabs, value 0 draws the close buttons vertically centered. Default value is 0 if the entry not exists.
  5. New is also the entry Inverted Pagebar Icons = 1 in [Options]; since the tabs have a dark background, it is necessary to have alternative color-inverted icons which appearing there. The new skin have already such icons, eg icons/tab_label_todo.png which is inverted in comparison to icons/label_todo.png. So the value 1 displays inverted icons, but with value 0 you see the normal icons on the tabs. Default is 0 if the entry not exists. Here I have to mention something unfinished; also the pagebar head and tail have a dark background now, but there are no inverted icons possible...

So, that was a first portion of info. I`m perhaps sometimes wrong or not yet that precise with my statements about the new skin, but I hope it helps for the first tries - follows more.

28. Mai 2008 - Skin changes since the preview-10014:

Changed:

  1. All the tiles from the skin folder /a are changed a bit; now only the blue border without blueysh center is displayed for spatial navigation (the new tiles eats now 34 kb file size instead of 2.5kb before!)
  2. I have to correct something, in the changelog for 9789 I said: "...that the additional section [Active element inside image] is not mandatory; delivers only the items for [Active element inside] via Clone = Active element inside image...". This is not or no longer true, but true is that the section [Active element inside image] draws the blue border without center for spatial navigation (and delivers also the blue border for [Active element inside] via clone - there with the center too).

New:

  1. New in the skin.ini are the sections [Address dropdown URL label] and [Address dropdown title label]. For both you can change only the `Text color=`. In case of the URL label the color is currently green (Text color = #006600) and for the title label it is blue (Text color = #000099)
  2. New in the section [Images] is the entry News no body = icons/news_nobody.png which refers to the new image icons/news_nobody.png (a dimmed version of the existing image icons/news_unread.png)
  3. New in [Images] are the following entries too: Discard draft = buttons/delete.png, Move to trash = icons/trash.png and Mail filter = icons/folder_closed.png (these entries referring to existing images)
  4. In case of the `Mail filter` mentioned above, you can add also the entry `Mail filter.open = icons/folder_open.png` so the old behaviour eg in the mail panel is back - with the major difference, that we have now the possibility to create own icons for the mail filters

  2. Skin.ini: New additional sections [Cycler page button skin.attention] and [Cycler page button skin.attention.selected] for a tab-analog behaviour in the page cycler (Ctrl+Tab). But there is a bug though: .attention.selected doesn`t works - it have to be .selected.attention!
  3. Skin.ini: New entry in the section [Images], Target folder = icons/folder_closed_link.png referring to the new/added icon image
  4. Skin.ini: New entry in the section [Images], Trash large = icons/trash.png, the icon therefore is already existing
  5. New icon-image icons/folder_closed_link.png as mentioned above
  6. The icons/dropup.png image is back; that was lacking since preview-9807

Changed:

  1. Skin.ini: Changed entry in the section [Images], from Thumbnail busy image = progress/busy_anim.GIF to Thumbnail busy image = progress/busy_anim.PNG, so now we have here an Apng-animation (which have 32kb file size!)

Changed:

  1. The images buttons/secure.png and buttons/security_4.png have changed a little bit: before they had a size of 17x22px, now they are 22x22px and at the left I see now 2px invisible border and at the right 3px, in order to have some space between the icons and the following text.
  2. Changed is also the icon icons/mail_nobody.png which is now a dimmed envelope instead of the old broken envelope (incomprehensible is for me the file size of 2805 bytes; my preferred program compresses this png to 324 bytes...).

Notes:

Still unfinished:

8. April 2008 - Skin changes since the preview-9864:

New/changed:

  1. New button-images buttons/secure.png and buttons/security_4.png with the corresponding entries in the skin.ini inside the section [Images]: High security simple = buttons/secure.png and Extended security = buttons/security_4.png (secure.png is a closed padlock in silver/grey and security_4.png is a closed padlock in gold/yellow). The new button.images appearing certificate-related inside the addressbar together with the new background therefore, but also the changed security button, reachable in Tools - Appearance - Buttons - Browser view, uses the new images.
  2. Changed are the sections [Security button skin] and [High assurance security button skin]: for both the old boxtile images are deleted - there are now the new boxstretch images trust_and_security_button/high_security.png (yellow for the `security button skin` - padlock silver/grey) and the trust_and_security_button/extended_security.png (green for the `high assurance security button skin` - padlock gold/yellow). It is highly recommended to draw these backgrounds in yellow and green and set colorize = 0, so these security items appears always and in each skin with approx. the same colors. In my opinion it is not a good idea to change the [Security button skin] to the type `Boxstretch`; this section is in use also in Opera versions before 9.5 (no boxstretch there), so such a custom skin is not compatible with the older Opera versions! Unclear is also the behaviour of all the `Fraud protection` items which appeared formerly on the same place in the addressbar.

Deleted:

  1. Deleted are some old entries in the section [Images]: Prefs Personal = contacts/contact_known.png, Prefs Browser = buttons/view.png, Prefs Pages = icons/page.png, Prefs Extensions = buttons/save.png, Prefs Network = buttons/security_3.png, Prefs None = icons/none.png (deleted are only the entries, but not the images - they appeared in the old preferences dialog in Opera before version 8).
  2. As mentioned above; the old security related background images are deleted: trust_and_security_button/high_assurance_bottom.png, high_assurance_center.png, high_assurance_left.png, high_assurance_top.png as well as trust_and_security_button/security_border.png and security_center.png (please note the comment about the changed `Security button skin` above!).

18. March 2008 - Skin changes since the preview-9815:

  1. New icon-image icons/widget_large.png with the corresponding entry in the skin.ini inside the section [Boxes]: Widget icon = icons/widget_large.png (it is a larger copy of the known `buttons/widget.png`; appears where?).
  2. The old unused sections [Startup dialog skin] and [Startup dialog header skin] are deleted now (the `Startup dialog skin` is still working).
  3. The section [Boxes] is moved to it`s old place above the `Images` section.

New/unfinished:

  1. The new section [Menu skin] uses now the correct `Browser window skin` if the section not exists; compatible now to older versions. But there is still the strange behaviour: if a boxtile or color is set for the `Menu skin`, this image/color appears in each hovered `Menu button`...
  2. In the section [Menu button skin] we can use now Margin too, so we have more possibilities to customize the menu bar. But the margins here are a bit strange; perhaps you have to increase the paddings too, because it seems that margin `eats` some padding...
  3. The paddings for the [Tooltip skin] still affects the speeddial thumbs and not as expected the common tooltips! For the speeddial thumbs we are already able to set padding in the section [Thumbnail widget skin]...

29. February 2008 - Skin changes since the preview-9807:

New:

  1. New section [Menu skin] which allows to set a color or images separately for the menu bar. It seems NOT to be compatible with older Opera versions; if the new section not exists you see there now the [Window skin] (before it was the [Browser window skin]). Padding is currently not possible in this section; the only feasible padding here comes still from the [Menu button skin] (which is not a `toolbar padding`) - so the new section is not fully customizable and not backwards compatible (not yet, so I hope). ADDENDUM: If in the new section a border is defined or for instance images as boxtile, the `Menu skin` appears in each hovered menu button as repetition - obviously the new thing is not yet finished...
  2. New behaviour for the [Tooltip skin]: we can use now padding there, but - the padding affects the speeddial thumbs and not as expected the common tooltips! Remember: for the speeddial thumbs we are already able to set padding in the section [Thumbnail widget skin]...

  4. Deleted old images in the folder selector_button/: deleted 18 images in this folder, except the image selector_selected.png.
  5. Deleted old skin-folders: startup_dialog/ with it`s content and toolbar_button/ with it`s content.

11. February 2008 - Skin changes since the preview-9770:

New:

  1. New skin.ini sections: [Active element inside], [Active element inside inverse] and [Active element outside]. The section [Active element inside] defines the border images and the transparent center image for spatial navigation (eg highlighted links if you use Shift+Arrow keys in a webpage). Please note, that the additional section [Active element inside image] is not mandatory; delivers only the items for [Active element inside] via Clone = Active element inside image. The sections [Active element inside inverse] and [Active element outside] seems to define different images to `Active element inside` for some rarely used exceptions. I recommend to draw all these images in the intended blue - so the look and behaviour is with each skin the same. In addition I recommend to set Colorize = 0 for all the new sections - so the elements are not affected by Opera`s color schemes.
  2. New skin-folder: /a containing the images for the new sections mentioned above.
  3. New icon entry in the section [Images]: Goto Widget Public Page = icons/unite_globe.png which refers to the new icon-image icons/unite_globe.png (appears where?).

Changed:

  1. The [Tooltip skin], mentioned in the changelog for 9745, accepts no longer a custom color for the text (Text color=); the tooltips text is always black. I hope that will be re-changed; because this way it is not possible to draw the tooltips with a dark background. In addition it is not possible to set Padding= or Margin= for tooltips - so at the moment the Tooltip skin is not fully skinnable.

Opera 9.5, 18.preview, 9745 [⊗]

18. January 2008 - Skin changes since the preview-9735:

New:

  1. Type = Boxstretch is a completely new image type for sections; together with Stretchborder=xy a new key entry. If a section have the Type = Boxstretch, only the Tile center is taken, and Stretchborder=xy (desired numeric value in pixels, default if no entry is 2) defines how much is taken from the original tile center in order to draw the outer parts - the center part is then drawed with the rest, stretched horizontally and vertically. The outer top/bottom parts are stretched horizontally only and the outer left/right parts are stretched vertically only. The outer corner parts are not stretched. Very practical for button areas with rounded corners (because the corner parts are excluded and the top / bottom / left and right parts are partly excluded from stretching by Stretchborder=. So we can have now larger base images which are nicer if they are shrunken by Boxstretch. Also suitable for toolbars or gradients. Example:
    [Example skin]
    Type = BoxStretch
    Tile center = imagefolder/center.png
    Stretchborder = 16

    image

Margin= and Padding= seems to work as intended for the sections where Boxstretch/Stretchborder is in use. Also Border= and Border color= works as expected, and Blend= in .hover sections too. Width= and Height= are ignored eg in toolbar sections, but if I define a common button as Boxstretch section, eg [Go to homepage], then Width=/Height= works as expected - defines the desired final size. Finally I found a strange effect: if the original Tile center is about 70 x 70 px or smaller the stretched images are not blurred/interpolated, but if the original is larger than 70 x 70 the stretched result is blurred/interpolated. There is no blur at all for Type = Boxstretch if in opera:config-multimedia-`Interpolate images` is deactivated (the Type = Image is not affected by this setting).

  2. Here a shorter explanation: the type Boxstretch combines the advantages of the types Boxtile and Image - only 1 pic stretched like the type `Image` but with borders excluded from stretching like the type `Boxtile`:image
  3. The already existing [Tooltip skin] draws now the background for common tooltips too. Formerly this section (if defined) was the base for the tab thumbnails background (behind the [Thumbnail widget skin]) - now it is responsible for common tooltips too. Padding, Margin or Spacing have no effect in the [Tooltip skin] or the [Thumbnail widget skin] and: the `Thumbnail widget skin` is always drawed 1px smaller and on the top of the `Tooltip skin`! If you like to have different backgrounds for tooltips and thumbs, the only way to avoid the 1px-`bug` is to draw a 1px border in the [Tooltip skin] section with the same color as the thumbs background. Bear in mind that in the standard skin the Tooltip skin is defined as clone of the Edit skin.

  1. Opera now supports APNG 1.0 (animated png) on webpages and on skins too. Please activate `Tools - Quick preferences - Enable Gif/SVG Animation` in order to see APNG animations in webpages (demos: here and here). In order to create apng-files you can try the Gif Movie Gear 4.2.0 APNG - please follow there the `Getting started`-steps (thanks to Lars). The quality difference between gif and apng in a skin and on webpages is immense. And the advantage of apng: you see the first frame instead of the animation if the browser doesn`t supports apng - so a skin containing apng-animations works also with older Opera versions (displays the first frame there) and a webpage with apng-animations, visited with another/older browser, displays the first frame too. See also the community thread Skinning with APNG
  2. New: Pagebar Document Loading Icon = inside the section [Images]. Appears instead of the `Window Document Loading Icon` and appears only on the tabs - e.g. inside the windows panel or on the addressbar you see still the `Window Document Loading Icon` (thanks to Lars)
  3. No more disappearing numbers and borders on configured speeddial thumbs
  4. Note that the `Pagebar Close Button Skin` now appears on the notifiers at the right too
  5. Note also the `Stop` button appearing during check or send on the new popup at the bottom of the mail panel
  6. Since preview-9500, changed view for the [Header button skin]. In dialogs or in mail views too, if you see the horizontal headers together with scrollbars; the right part of the header, above the scrollbar is now separated (and disabled by Opera). That makes sense, but is not very nice. You can define own darker or lighter images for the [Header button skin.disabled] in order to reach the same brightness like for the `Header button skin` (thanks to Skinner* and Ayush)
