[I added the section about coding new search engines. I did not find a wiki article about this particular issue, so I just linked to my own blog.. On the long run, I would like to see a wiki article about this subject, but without talking about ini files ..]

Configuring Opera's Search Settings
You can fully edit the search engines in Opera, adding up to 50 search engines in total.
Since Opera 9, adding a search engine takes literally three clicks:

- On the page with an example search field, right-click the search field.
- Click "Create search"
- Click OK on the dialog that appears.
Existing search engines can be managed through the Search pane in the Preferences.
This dialog also allows to manipulate the code of those engines, or to code your own searches. These can do similar things as the search fields presented in this wiki - but without eating screen space. See
- Customize your search engines with javascript. This community blog article contains some experimental-state examples of specialised keyword searches, such as google site search, babelfish translation of the active page, simultaneous search in different engines, or starting a last.fm tag radio.
The following is a list of links to other tools that can be used to edit search engines. These tools are generally not required at all for Opera 9, but may still be of use for some purposes. Needless to say, these are targeted at versions prior to 9.
- SearchINIEditing - A guide on how to manually edit your search engines (adapted from Martin Scrode's article, but updated for the latest versions of Opera).
- The Search.ini Editor - Andrzej Olaczek's excellent Search.ini editor. Using this program, it is easy to edit and manage your search settings for Opera for those who do not want to manually edit their files.
- SearchPlugins - A database of hundreds of search plugins for Opera. You can install these into OpSED (plugin), or even if you do not have OpSED you can drag'n'drop buttons and search fields directly into Opera's toolbars!
- FindingPOSTQueries - A more advanced guide to help users add search engines that use POST queries rather than GET.
- SearchFieldEditor - To create drag and drop search fields and buttons, a tutorial is included, you can make supersearches with this tool too :)
