Posting in the My Opera Mail Forum

When you post a new thread in the Mail Forum:

* Please make sure you search first. Select the forums you want to search in, set "after" to "any date" and type a list of words separated by a space or AND or OR. See the bottom of the search page for examples. Use your best judgment on whether you should revive an old thread or start a new one. For mail, it's common to search in both the mail and wish-list forums.

* Please make sure it's not a feature request or wish. Those belong in the Wish-list Forum, even for mail.

* Please note that the mail forum is English-only. If you need to post in a different language, please use the mail forums in the language-specific forums.

* Please make sure the thread is about Opera's built-in mail client and not http://operamail.com or http://mail.opera.com/

* Please use a short, descriptive title that describes the problem.

* Please only post one issue/question per thread. Please don't group multiple issues into the same thread. After your issue is answered/resolved, please don't do the "and one more thing..." post in the thread. Start a new thread. This applies to wish-list forum threads too where you should only post one mail wish per thread.

* Please don't include irrelevant introductory information like, "I hope this isn't already posted, I searched, but didn't find anything" or "I've been using Opera for x years ... your life story ...". Although that may be interesting, please get straight to the point.

* Please use complete sentences, proper capitalization, good grammar and punctuation. And, please group your thoughts into paragraphs. If you're not that good at English, feel free to wing it, but please make an effort.

* Please use the default text size and color. Even if you like big text in purple, that doesn't mean others will, and if you annoy others, they may not want to help.

Please include lots of info about your setup

Providing your setup info will help others help you and will allow others to get right to your question instead of spending the first N posts quizzing you on your setup.

Please provide as much of the following information as possible. Use your best judgment about what's relevant to your question/issue, but please note that all the info can help others help you for reasons you're not aware of.

* Your operating system and version and whether it's 32bit or 64bit.

If Windows, please specify if you're using WinXP? or Vista/Win7? as it matters for directions involving paths.

* The language/locale you're using in your operating system.

* The Opera version and build number you're using and whether its a 64bit or 32bit version. Enter opera:about in the address field to find out.

Also, specify the locale you're using in Opera. See "Ctrl + F12 -> General" and look at what the language is set to.

Entering javascript:alert(navigator.userAgent)%3B in the address field, copying the result and pasting it into the post can be an easy way to give some of this info.

* Specify any anti-virus/firewall/security programs you're using. If the anti-virus software you're using also has an email scanner, make sure you mention that too and specify whether it's enabled.

* Specify the number of mail accounts you have setup in Opera and specify the type of each (IMAP or POP). Specify if you use Feeds, Newsgroups and chat too. Specify the mail provider for each account (Gmail IMAP or Gmail POP for example).

This info helps a lot for backup/troubleshooting/fixing directions.

* If you're having connection problems with an account, in Opera, go into the account's properties and on the servers tab, mention what server names you're using, what ports, what authentication methods and whether you have TLS checked.

Also, enable logging and link to the log.

* If you're using "low-bandwidth mode", make sure to mention that.

* If you're using a custom mail folder location, specify the path you have it at (some other drive, network drive etc.). You can enter opera:about in the address field and look at "Mail Root Directory".

* If you're using the usb version (as chosen in the Opera installer) where Opera is installed to a folder and there's just a single "profile" folder in that folder, please specify that.

* If you're using Opera@USB, specify that.

* Specify whether you're using a fresh install of Opera or if you upgraded. If you can remember the build you upgraded from, that will also be helpful. If you remember what version and build of Opera you installed fresh before you ever upgraded, that'd be good to know too.

Note: "fresh" in this case means, that you started off by installing Opera and you didn't use any existing profile folders (meaning no settings or mail or anything was used from an older profile).

* If you're trying to import from another mail client, include all kinds of info about it too.

* If you're having visual problems with Opera, make sure to mention what skin you're using.

* If you're using a really slow computer, you might want to mention that too if it's relevant.

* Please include screenshots whenever possible. But, make sure the screenshots *clearly* show the problem.

* If you're having major issues with server, besides including a log as mentioned earlier, it'd be best if you can provide a test account. (obviously not needed for providers where anyone can setup a free account, but still nice anyway)

Again, when you know some info couldn't possible be relevant to your problem, omit it.

Now, while it's not expected for someone to provide all of the following, the following is an example of info that's often desired from the OP.

Basic Info:

Operating System: Win7 64-bit, en-US

Opera Version: 11.61.1250, en-US, 32-bit

Security Software: Microsoft Security Essentials, Built-in Windows Firewall. No anti-virus email scanners or web shields.

Opera installation: Installed as admin for all users with "make Opera the default" set to the default location of the program files folder. Installed Opera 11.10 fresh with a fresh profile and have been upgrading ever since. Running Opera as a limited/normal user, not as an admin.

Opera Skin: Using the "Opera Standard" skin.

Opera Toolbar, Menu and Keyboard Setup: Using "Opera Standard" menu and keyboard setup. Using "Opera Standard" with customizations. But, customizations are based on the "Opera Standard" from 11.10 (been upgrading with those customizations since), not 11.61.1250.

Hardware Acceleration Enabled (see opera:gpu): No, software backend

Mail Info:

Not using low-bandwidth mode for any accounts. Subscribed to some feeds, but don't have any IRC or newsgroup accounts.

Have 3 IMAP accounts and one POP account.

For the POP account, "leave messages on the server until I permanently delete" is checked. All messages shown in Opera are still on the server.

For IMAP, all 3 accounts have the offline setting set to "make all messages available offline" and none of them have "do not download attachments".

All accounts have "include this account when checking manually" and all accounts have "check every" set to 10 minutes or more.

The mail layout is set to "list and message on right".

"Mail Root Directory" has been changed to d:\Opera\Mail. d: is external usb drive (sata drive in with usb converter, not cheap thumb drive). Drive is always properly ejected before it is removed from the computer.

The import thing here is that users reading your thread shouldn't have to drill you have the basics like Opera version and whether you're using IMAP or POP.
