Opera Wish List

This is a page to keep track of any wishlist items for future versions of Opera. This is NOT an official wish list, use either the wish list forum or the wishlist. This page is intended to collate the most useful wishes so one can see them all at one. It is divided into sections for how hard each wish is to implement. If you want to add a wish, just edit the page (see FormattingRules to see how to format the text). Please try to be realistic and courteous to others.

65.10.221.65: a 'dandy' user JS manager can be added with:
http://nontroppo.org/wiki/OperaPythonUserJSSwitcher

However, I do believe it is in severe need of an official interface.

I tried to edit this page with Konqueror but it really messed up the layout (see History). I had to fix it with Firefox.

For <b>partial Source Viewer ( partial outerHTML )</b> : <i>clicking a element will show his html source. pressing shift does highlight the target. with delete the code stops working. it's recommended to use it with a user stylesheet with: pre { white-space: -pre-wrap }</i> BM's ( Bookmarklets ) see: http://www.aleto.ch/webTools/webBMs.html

M2: Rich Text (html content) would be nice. Plain text is enough in some cases for me.

200.223.178.62 (2006-06-27 19:14:09)

M2: Rich Text (html content) would be nice.

I second that, just today i ended up having to send my e-mails out through Outlook express at work here, because i couldn't set up my M2 like i wish i could. big thing for me.

70.71.240.235 (2006-07-19 17:14:32)

M2: Rich Text (html content) would be nice.

+1

99% of the time, plain text is fine--better even. But in some cases, sending HTML email is required.

149.135.62.35 (2006-07-24 11:42:21)

IMHO address book needs vast improvement. It's sorta half baked at the moment. Way behind even OE: seperation of home/business details for instance. And multiple phone numbers: anyone w/ just one phone number these days? I have 4 right now...

149.135.62.35 (2006-07-24 11:54:57)

M2: seperate email attachments from message body, so that they can be saved elsewhere, while keeping the email body for archiving purposes. Currently I still keep those fairly useless attachments (which are bloating my mail archive).

149.135.62.35 (2006-07-24 12:02:41)

This list is hilarious and the comments are equally naive. The development task list for Opera right now should be the following:

1) Findbar instead of find window (search-as-you-type)

2) Support for RoboForm?/Gator (preferably roboform)

3) Better support for developers who want to write plug-ins

4) New tab goes to homepage option

5) Plug-ins replicating google searchkeys firefox extension and google preview

6) (optional, but would be nice) Ability to use the Opera engine as a component in software applications

--that's it--

If you need ICQ - go download it. LOL. Who needs highlighting? My lord. This is why Opera is not popular. I want to use Opera, but how can I when no plug-ins exist, its hard for me to write new plug-ins, and basic things such as new tab homepage are unavailable?

I wish Opera had a selective downloading for the bitTorrent client.
And more bitTorrent capabilities found in other bitTorrent clients, so we could have one app less in our discs and RAM's!

per-server settings

can't these be done already by removing the page path from the hostname in the page options dialog? for example i have changed preferences for myspace.com as a whole, instead of for separate pages.

80.44.120.138 (2007-06-26 08:50:01)

how about when you accidentally open a javascript link a new window
ie javascript:GoUrl?('support')
that it can issue the command properly rather than giving a blank page.. (because the link now has no host..)

or that you can enter addresses from shift-f2 if you don't have the bookmark nick you thought you had..

they're doing a great job though, for sure!

A "Do not let gmail (or any other page) take focus" option would be great.

To the last commenter, Tools > Prefs > Advanced > Content > JS Options, and disable "Allow raising of windows".

- ability to use middle mouse button to open "javascrip:popupout("somesite.com")" in background
- costomization on the "speed dial" (adding more then 9 sites, more search engines there, ect.)
- ability to remove float popups with the "block content" feature

193.217.132.139 (2008-01-15 19:49:25)

- a command line argument (or data in ini file...) to run opera without its caption bar.

i use opera with window maximised 99.9% of time, i don't need the caption bar... But i don't like the full screen mode (even with tab bar, etc... shown) because i need the O.S. task bar...

I don't quite understand the "Editable Super Search" in Medium/Large above refers too - perhaps it could be explained bit better? I link you here to my recent request on the Opera site for something that I feel would offer a significant improvement:

Notes is a bit flakey as in I have to wait for a few seconds sometimes to see my typing appear. Otherwise, just a great browser!!!

207.102.6.123 (2009-08-18 04:15:32)

I use opera a lot for downloading images, web tidbits and other info from the net using a lot of tabs. I think its useful for opera for each tab to remember where to save the file instead of the common folder history.

121.97.86.131 (2009-09-18 20:18:25)

I'd like an option to force opening a link in the same window.

87.202.43.254 (2009-11-24 05:48:03)

I would love a "Check all feeds" button in the context menu of right-click on "Feeds", or include checking feeds when I click on "Check/Send" for mails.

81.196.181.216 (2010-04-01 07:00:59)

How about multiple pages for speed dial. Right now that is an awesome feature yet limited to your screen size and the amount you are willing to squeeze in at the expense of being able to actually identify the dials.

Browsing speed dial like a folder could be nice. This could even replace favorites. The main speed dial page would able to regroup categories (folders) like News, Search Engines, Miscellaneous, School Pages, Blogs, etc... Digging through will bring you to a normal speed dial page showing the dials you saved under that particular category.

Naturally back and forward button included. Kind of surfing through folders except getting speed dials instead of files.

I mean there are more than 24 pages that I access on a daily basis.

This might be memory intensive though...

137.132.250.11 (2010-06-08 02:38:57)

How about a MENU BAR? They removed it in 10.50, and I refuse to download newer versions until they bring the menu bar back. Forcing users to click on the O in the corner to access all menus just makes them click more.

74.251.193.226 (2010-06-25 15:09:30)

I would like to be able to paste images from clipboard to mail body. Such a basic feature that is missing. So annoying to have to save the image first and then go through menus and filesystem to select image file to add...

60.242.79.70 (2010-07-04 09:43:41)

I'd like to see the following features/changes/amendments in future versions of Opera (10.6x and upward) ...

Feature request: Search Field
The new layout of the search field with the search engine selection button on the left and the search (or "go") button on the right looks cluttered and confusing. There should only be one button (preferably on the right) where the search engine icon acts as the search (or "go") button and the arrow on the right edge of the icon displays the drop down menu.

Feature request: Search Field
There should be an option to clear and disable "Previous searches" in the User Preferences.

Feature request: Search Field
The "Manage Search Engine" dialogue should include a simple way to re-arrange the order of the search engines. The settings of the individual search engines should be all on one page. There's no need for a "details" button as there are only 7 parameters.

Feature request: Page Search
I really don't like the new page search in 10.60. It's search field is in the wrong place for me, the search bar is sluggish and jittery, it moves the page content down which I find very irritating and the opacity is plain ugly. I have set the opacity to 0 in the Prefs which helps a little. But what I really want is the old search window from previous versions. Can't this be made available again through an option in the User Preferences, so that people have a choice? Or, better still, can't we have a page search field for the address bar that has one button (preferably on the right) which combines the up/down arrows for page searches (maybe through a horizontal or a diagonal split)? The same button could also offer extended settings like "Match case", "Match whole word only" and "Round robin search" in its right-click menu. And please, no pushing down the page content and no opacity!

Feature request: Maximize/Restore Button
Since the menu bar in Opera 10.60 is by default turned off, windows (tabs) no longer have the traditional minimize, maximize/restore, close buttons in the top right corner. I have replaced the default "close all" button at the right edge of the tab bar with a standard "close" button from the OperaWiki? buttons page. But there is no "maximize/restore" button on the OperaWiki? buttons page that properly toggles the window between maximum size and a somewhat smaller, sensibly sized window (the current default size is far too small). It would be good if Opera made such a button available.

Feature request: Tab Bar
I have tons of bookmarks which I keep well organized in a split-view panel on the left side of the screen. I therefore frequently use the panel toggle at the edge of the screen to display or hide the bookmarks. Since I prefer the navigation buttons not to move with the varying window width but always to be in the same place, I moved them from the address bar to the left side of the tab bar, next to the new Menu button. This has done wonders for navigating Opera with the mouse. Although the buttons are now a tiny fraction further away from the center of the window I can almost find them blindfolded since they're always in the same place.

But there's an issue with this. The tab bar has a mechanism to automatically grow or shrink the width of its elements according to the number of open tabs. If there is one or more fixed spacers to group the navigation buttons on the left side of the tab bar the position of the buttons will be affected by the mechanism. Isn't it possible to limit the grow/shrink mechanism to the tabs themselves and exclude whatever buttons there may be at the left side or the right side of the tab bar?
