Opera Wish List

This is a page to keep track of any wishlist items for future versions of Opera. This is NOT an official wish list, use either the wish list forum or the wishlist. Also, you can enter an enhancement request in the Opera bug-tracker. This page is intended to collate the most useful wishes so one can see them all at one. It is divided into sections for how hard each wish is to implement. If you want to add a wish, just edit the page (see FormattingRules to see how to format the text). Please try to be realistic and courteous to others.

WISHES:

Small

CORE: Allow multiple search terms for search.ini, e.g. %s1 %s2 etc. for each entry seperated by spaces. That allows multiple entry search engines to work. Keep %s to mean all entered text so compatibility with previous versions will be retained.
UI: Cycle pages should seperate 'without showing list' for BOTH 'recently used order' and 'page bar order' - so a user can use a mouse gesture using both ways without incuring the page-list popup.
UI: Ability to choose, when closing a page, to go to the next one in page bar order or the last one used.
External: Integration into Windows XP set program access and defaults.
UI/CORE: Refresh options for hotlist panels.
UI: Show URLs in the Links and History panels.
UI: 'Closed' parent in the Window Panel that you could expand to list the closed window list
UI: Keep history of search words in dropdown box for e.g. quick find and the search fields.
UI: Customizable "Save to >" menu that allows to download a page/file to predefined folders.
M2: mark message as "Not spam" without adding sender as contact.
M2: Active threads working for newsgroups as well as mail.
M2: support for x-noarchive for usenet postings
M2: ability to add alternative email addresses that aren't sent to (ie for complete contact email history)
M2: pressing E on an email sent by the user will bring up other emails to/from the recipient
M2: ability to remove > at the beginning of selected lines
M2: QUICK REPLY: checkbox to toggle appending quote of original email
UI: Three pane 'Manage Notes' dialog.
Opera6.ini has an [Environment Variable] section (first one processed) where one could SET the values of environment variables.
UI: Disable the error messages, eg. the Mail errors.
CORE: Create a Profile Manager.
M2: Ability to use contacts in filter rules.

Medium

UI: "Always on Top" option for windows. The window would optional go over the browser Main Bar. Useful to keep a small popup with useful information to quickly refer to.
CORE: Per-server settings
Bookmarks: Use multiple bookmark files.
UI: Sticky searches for bookmarks organisation (see StickySearches for more details).
UI: More user defined mouse customisation (left/middle/right, scrollwhell & +key combinations)
UI: Ability to add buttons/fields etc to the menu-bar, so it becomes like all the other UI bars in Opera. This would save UI space.
UI: Menu editor
M2: "Real" M2 filters (support actions other than just move to folder).
UI: Universal drag + drop for text (within Opera's windows/UI elements, to desktop, other apps etc.).
UI: Wrappable Page/Personal bar (better than the current extender).
UI: Auto hiding of toolbars, including the hotlist. Displays when on mouse over.
Forms: Autocomplete in Form Fields.
Display: Fit to window, rotate and precaching for images in slideshow mode.
CORE: Show partial source: only show the source for the highlighted part of a page.
M2: Notification in system tray.
UI: Auto-Complete address bar with items in Bookmarks. (IE. To go to Hotmail, I type 'hot' and the address bar completes it with 'mail.com').
M2: improved message threading. Suggestion : Option / Toggle to take subject line into account to join messages in threads.
M2: possibility to store IMAP messages locally.
M2: joining and decoding of multi-message encoded binary postings.
M2: possibility (config option) to auto-extract binaries from the main db to a folder, inserting a local link(s) pointing to the file(s). Batch option to do this on entire view or selected mails. Possible reverse option to join them back in for export/transport.
M2: Full mail reindexing option available from menu. M2 recovery options in case of index and/or storage file corruption.
M2: 'Archive Read mode' : view and search exported message archive files in Unix MBX format in read-only mode without impacting master DB (but allows copying in of messages/contacts)
Core: Auto merging of .ini files (keyboad,mouse,menu,toolbar configs) with user prompts on conflicts.
M2: Support *bold*, _underline_ and /italics/
Bookmarks: Allow the automatic conversion of bookmarks between Opera7 and I.E 6.x.
UI: Flexible toolbars - Allow IE-style freedom of arrangement of toolbars. For example, it's counter-intuitive to have the Personal Bar on top of the Page Bar, imo.

Medium-Large

UI/CORE: Multicolor Highlight search words (like Google toolbar), with single box for both web search and find-in-page search.
UI/CORE: Be able to use a highlight-pen to select text on a page - each highlighted entry will be saved to a buffer. That buffer can then be saved to a note or copied to clipboard.
CORE: Save pages including all referenced objects in single-file format.
CORE: Allow copying with or without formatting
UI: PhotoShop-style "Magnifying glass" tool for zooming into pages
M2: Option to use seperate Mail DB's per account to allow even better handling of huge message bases.
SEARCHING: Editable Super Search(es), not just Search Engine 1 + Search Engine 2.
DISPLAY: "Outline" mode, allowing to collapse sections of page (e.g. a headline and the following text)
Core: Ability to select multiple groups of text (ctrl+drag)
CORE: Support for CSS3 Selectors
Bookmarks: Allow the type colour and style of each bookmark to be set.
CORE: Command that opens the linked/used CSS file - if there is any (like "View [document|frame] source" that opens the source HTML file) (UPDATE: work-around: create button with 'Go to link element, "stylesheet"' & View source)
CORE: mathML support
CORE: full CSS3 support as one of the first browsers (mozilla and safari have already implemented much of CSS3)

Large

(Might require a lot of reworking current code)

CORE: API for extensions
IM: implement Jabber
Calendar / Time manager / PIM

Huh? side by side is the same as vertical surely? And why is horizontal better than the current solution. To be honest I don't know what COMPASS is, but explorer uses vertical panes exactly as implemented in Opera already.

This is a feature in Internet Explorer 6, which I really like. It's better than constantly going to the Bookmarks area.

h24-76-20-226.wp.shawcable.net - why not make a nickname for a hotmail boomark - you simply type 'hm' and it would go to hotmail for you. Just make a bookmark, and put 'hm' for the nickname to use. People have different feelings about inline autocomplete - I've turned it off in IE, but maybe I'm just not used to it.

Those actions are left over from when Opera had an ICQ client. I believe Opera is considering implementing XMPP (the open-source messaging prototocol which Jabber uses) some time in the near future.

I've been searching and haven't found an answer yet, so I assume it's currently not possible to delete installed skins. If I'm incorrect, please do share how to do so! If not, this is definitely a feature I'd like to see added.

Go to preferences (ALT-P), selecting Skins in the left panel. Select the skin you want to get rid of and press 'delete'.

i think it is possible to delete skins, you just have to go to the skins directory and delete the corresponding file:
the directory would be C:\Program Files\Opera7\skin where C is the drive u installed it to,

I miss expand/collapse feature for bookmark subfolders (not the entire that - that works). If there is a solution please drop a note to "husik 1 @ arcor . de" (remove spaces).

A Profile Manager to avoid having to log on/off your desktop environment every time you want to change settings, mail accounts, bookmarks etc. between users. I know you can hack this by creating separate shortcuts with the /Settings option, but you will not be able to password protect your profile, and it's a hack!

Small: (Wand related)

Make it possible to use the wand before the page is finished loading. As long as the closing form tag has been loaded, it shouldn't be a problem. Right now I have to either cancel the page loading or wait until everything is loaded before I'm able to use the wand-button.

Maybe I've overseen it, but the print style of Opera is incredible.
I wish a Wysiwyg print similar to the view of the monitor, and mot to choose which of the pictures I want to print, only everything, that has to be possible.

Java already in the installation package, that would be really cool. I cant work without Java enabled, but if you are an extremely computer nono like me, it's not cool to find out how that works (even with the manual on the site).

Ability to turn off all communication in/out Opera.
e.g. just fired up Opera and its trying to open 100 windows (from prev session) but modem disabled. I will have to click on 100 (can't open window) messages.
Also ability to select a number of windows and allow certain actions against them e.g. no incoming/outgoing requests from that group (or alert me), put on different refresh cycle, delete etc.

Would like to allow a site to use a cookie if this is needed to read my email or to buy something, without allowing all sites to place cookies, and without going into preferences/menus etc...
Is there a button (something I can hit with my mouse?) to allow one session of cookies and when leaving that site, the cookie is deleted instantly??

Large: M2: I don't want to sound like a Luddite, but the mail client in Opera6 WAS better in that it made it easier to edit/backup/sift through your mails. Keeping more profiles in M2 also confuses mail DB files. (Another irritant is that M2 is a great system providing everybody adhered to the same rules when marking e-mails (From:/Subject: etc) and using attachments.)
LArge M2: Get rid of the emoticons, they're childish!

a small minimal audio player built into the browser would be nice. I often browse the net while listening to my music and it would be nice to have it in just one program rather that use my dual monitor setup one to browse the net the other to switch music so i don't have to constantly minimise and maximise my browser

I would love to se GPG encryption being implemented in the Opera Mail, this seemed to be a feature that had been long time asked for it and the Opera team have seemed to look everytime the other way when things are bring up.
