Opera 7 and CSS

Summary: This page is intended to hold links / descriptions of active CSS bugs in the new rendering engine of Opera7. It is split into two sections (bugs & other issues). If you want to write about a new bug (many hands making light work), just click on ‘the EYE’ to edit the page (see FormattingRules to see how to format the text). Before posting a bug here, report it to the Opera Bug Tracking System (or make sure someone else has already).

Pseudo-class/element bugs (mostly :hover)

Outline on :hover Bug Problems with outline generated through a :hover pseudo-class. In this example, some position:fixed divs have :hovers placed on them. The top and bottom divs (ants) have an outline that fails to render properly.
:hover, justification and whitespace - Shows that Opera misapplies hover formatting when there is whitespace in a link within justified text.
dt:hover + dd - selector does not work.
Linebreak and :hover Bug - The links fail to render properly due to hard linebreaks between links.
:hover and specified width - CSS ‘popup’ effects (with :hover pseudo-class) on nested boxes may cause Opera7 to only partially display the inner boxes if the outer box has an explicit width.
Pseudo-class Font Problem - Showing font display errors by misapplying pseudo-class elements.
CSS/Edge Menu - There are some subtle Opera related issues here. See here for further discussion.
:first-line and :first-letter - In the fourth test on this page, Opera does not apply :first-line or :first-letter styles to non-inline descendants of the selected element.
:first-letter and inline-block - Opera fails to apply :first-letter on an inline-block.
:first-line and fixed backgrounds - fixed background images scroll in :first-line elements when they shouldn’t.

Overflow Problems

Overflow:auto Doesn’t work when Max-height declared - The vertical scrollbar fails to show up only when max-height is declared
Text hidden by overflow cannot be selected by dragging the mouse - if it is hidden behind the right or bottom border of the overflowed CSS box.
Keyboard or mousewheel scrolling is disabled in blocks with overflow:auto - See also here for a good example: the Uru news site

Box Model / Positioning Errors

Empty Cells Not rendering correctly - tables with empty-cells: hide; set don’t render correctly (bug-129573).
Border-Collapse - the last two tables on this page fails to collapse the right border.
Reverse WindowShade Bug Nice (almost useable) bug related to fixed position inside relatively positioned block elements. This bug was fixed in Opera 9 beta 1 build 8031.
Position: Fixed bug - Unspecified position doesn’t cause correct static placement.
Margin Issue - The margin between the two DIVS should collapse, but it doesn’t.
Width of Absolutely Positioned Element Wrongly affected - Absolutely positioned element incorrectly positions; this bug was fixed in Opera 9 beta 1 build 8031. (see another example here).
Inline-block bugs - Two bugs with the newly-supported display: inline-block property.
Relative positioning of overlapping elements - Ordering of overlapping divs and content is wrong.
Re-adjustment of Vertical Position on Resize - Resizing the window allows the absolutely positioned box to adjust horizonatally, but not vertically (see here for more info).
Horizontal Margins Computation - Horizontal margins set to auto are not computed properly when the box overflows.

Absolute Width - Box should expand according to CSS2.1 spec.
Gaps At Bottom of DIVs - I’ve found new behavior regarding percentage heights of replaced objects within a sized DIV, with gaps appearing below the object.
Wrapping of display:inline elements causes rendering to ‘ghost - Resize the window small enough so that the buttons wrap - the text ghosts to the right.
Floats stretch containing boxes if a width is set on the container.
Nested box bug - The height of an element is computed incorrectly if set as a percentage and it’s container has any vertical border/padding.
Floats positioning rule 5 not honored - A float should not be higher than earlier ones: rule not honored.

Font Control

Links lose underlines - When the display property is set on links, they lose the default underline style.
Link problems with nowrap and monospace - Links fail to display properly when white-space: nowrap and font-family: monospace are specified.

OTHER STUFF

Box Model - Opera implements the CSS3 property to configure which box-model to use (W3C or MS version), and switches its initial value depending on DocType - OperaQuirksMode (for full discussion see here)
Opera 7 susceptible to several new CSS hiding hacks - I suppose these are bugs, although CSS hacks can be very useful in the real world. See also the Star-7 Hack (which is not valid mark-up) to hide CSS from all versions of Opera. This is a a hack that exploits a bug in Mozilla. Opera should not try to emulate this bug.
