A Microsoft-invented, extremely dangerous plugin technology, wh
ich is (without plugins) only supported by Microsoft Internet Explorer. It is basically the same as running a common Win32 application, except for that it is embedded in a web page.
That why I hate ActiveX !
202.84.156.133 (2005-12-27 22:30:10)
me too I hate ativeX
61.77.116.218 (2006-06-21 06:20:37)
Why is activeX so dangerous?
58.107.5.233 (2007-03-08 13:27:06)
how to execute ativeX in my opera browser just as ordinary i.e 6 about able to accomplish some task in my window such as download some useful files?
60.48.255.249 (2007-12-16 17:29:51)
ActiveX aren't dangerous. It's you people that don't know how to use it.
In the end, all "standards" plugins could be used just as like ActiveX.
The hate against ActiveX is because it is created by Microsoft. Without ActiveX or similar plugins you can't use flash or java, nor become a video addict on youtube as nowadays' trend goes.
Your description is highly incorrect. The user must accept the use of ActiveX making it very safe, unless it's some kiddies that's using it.
Also, what 59.167.120.179 described is in effect working and has always been.
213.217.230.192 (2008-03-11 01:55:17)
Oh and one last thing, haven't you wondered how come neptune's plugin for non IE browsers could also run ActiveX?
Where's all the security in the other browsers if they could run ActiveX by their own plugins? It's like the kettle calling the pot black.
213.217.230.192 (2008-03-11 01:57:43)
I completely agree!
ActiveX isn't always bad. But all those MS sux kiddies seem not to be able to decide which activeX script to run or not.
Okay, I agree that the settings window of IE isn't as much as user-friendly like in Opera or Firefox but if you configure IE as proposed on many security sites and avoid such dubious sites that deal with warez hackz and all the crap, you won't have any trouble even using IE.
I did so for the last 7 years and I got me no virus in that time not even via an ActiveX script.
Oh, before I forget:
A spyware program and a virus scanner might also help you a lot!
And for all those linux fanboys: Also linux will be in danger as there are 2 trojans known that can get root rights theirselves without user action (however it requires you to run a X11 server like KDE oder GNome... native shell users aren't affected but I doubt that there's a suitable web browser for the shell)
Okay... nuff said.
Sucessfully tested ActiveX scripts with FF1.5 to 2.0.0.15 with a specific plugin.
With a bit bending, you can make Opera and FF3.0 run ActiveX also, using the IE rendering engine for such sites in your favorite browser. Simpy google for "neptune" and "ActiveX" or "IETab"
As previously stated, ActiveX will only run under Windows as other OSses don't run EXE binaries!
And my last statement: Quit blaming ActiveX,IE and/or Windows for all malicious things because its YOU who decides what to run in the browser and how safe you configure your system.
It's just a matter of knowledge how safe an OS can be. Even linux can be unsafe if improperly configured. And if there weren't some cracks that bundled good linux distributions (i.e. Debian, Red Hat, SuSe?, Ubuntu and the like), I think most of you geeks running a linux box won't have been able to run linux at all.
(think back when you have installed SuSe? 5.0, how difficult it was to get some hardware to work, the X11 server and your network card.)
only those who were willing enough to study the manpages were able to get a good linux to run. Now most linux distributions have foolproof configuration wizards embedded even with a GUI to make even idiots run Linux...
And I bet if there will be a new OS out and the number of virusses for Linux start to raise, most kiddies will see Linux as crappy as Microsofts Windows...

"Without ActiveX or similar plugins you can't use flash or java, nor become a video addict on youtube as nowadays' trend goes."
What an incredibly stupid statement.

Why not allow the user to decide whether to allow a particular ActiveX to run? With an option to "always allow" or "just this time" or "just this site"
